With a little know-how you can uncover a chic Ibiza that’s far from the maddening crowd.
With stunning coastlines and pristine beaches fashionable Ibiza is an island of extremes.
The third largest Balearic Island is a mix of hedonistic party-goers, rugged coastline and tranquillity.
But it’s not all raucous stag dos and lobster-pink brits – if you dig a little deeper you’ll find another glorious, hip, Ibiza waiting to be discovered.
A long established summer haunt for celebrities; those with the inside track, like long time Ibiza residents celebrities Elle Macpherson and James Blunt, head for the north of the island.
Most visitors flock to party town San Anotonio on the east of the island and Eivissa or Ibiza town as it is most commonly known. But in the north there is a booming market in boutique hotels and agri hotels; more invitingly known as ‘eco-lounging’.
In the north of the island you are far enough away from the maddening crowds leaving you free to relax, take in the stunning natural beauty and dip into the nightlife when you want to.
The island is famous for its sunsets. Locals head to Cala Xarraca, a picturesque bay with crystal clear water and a small beach. Surrounded by rocky paths and lush green forest go for a dip at sunset, it’s magical.
The next bay along, Cala Xuclar, is another hidden gem. Never overcrowded it is the beach of choice for locals and clued up ex-pats.
It’s not difficult to see why the jet-set flock to this end of the island – it’s chic but quiet and that is the appeal. Just in from the coast is the village of San Juan, home to island resident Jade Jagger. The white washed traditional houses line the cobbled streets. It’s like stepping back in time to when the island was a quiet Spanish backwater.
Follow the twisting pine-lined road down to the fine beach at Cala San Vicente for a spot of snorkeling and sun worshipping.
Ibiza is famous for chilling out – and the north of the island is positively horizontal. Ibiza’s agri hotels or eco-lounging are unique in the Mediterranean. Tucked away in rural idylls they are country houses with land that is used to farm figs, oranges, almonds or vegetables. Whatever your budget you can find a simple farmhouse to an exclusive luxury stay and they are most abundant in the north of the island.
The north of the island gives you the best of both worlds and if you fancy a night on the tiles you’re only ever 30 odd minutes away from Ibiza’s buzzing nightlife.
